Hope to see you there.

AUC Unity Workshop Scholarships

The Apple University Consortium is offering 40 partially funded scholarships to University students for Unity related workshops.

From the AUC Website:

Ever wanted to learn how games like Counter Strike and Quake worked behind the scenes? Ever wanted to learn how to take your own idea for a game and implement it? Ever wanted to learn how to write great games for platforms like the Mac, iPhone and even Windows? Well this workshop is for you.

This workshop will introduce participants to the fundamentals of game development using modern development tools. In this workshop students will develop an appreciation for the tools and techniques that make a great game. Some of the key game concepts that will be covered include Physics, 3D graphics, animation and audio.

While the focus of this workshop in on Game Development students will get hands on experience with a real game development platform known as Unity. Unity provides a modern integrated development environment (IDE) for 3D content development on the Mac OS X desktop platform. It allows developers to assemble 3D games and simulations using a flexible drag-and-drop environment, and a fully integrated scripting environment, based on the JavaScript, Python and C# languages. Users develop on the OS X platform, and can deploy native applications to all OS X platforms, Microsoft Windows, the iPhone and the Nintendo Wii.

If you are interested in developing great games, this workshop is an absolute MUST.

Visit the AUC website for me details.

Web based content can be displayed on the computers within our labs however laptops will need to be used for other forms of work(power supplied). If you have something to show then be sure to let one of the committee members know so that they can help you set up.

At about 5:30 we will be having a short presentation about the club and our plans for the coming year. This shall conclude by starting our second week long Game Jam with the announcement of its theme.

The rest of the evening will be open for more ‘meeting and greeting’ as well as providing an opportunity for people to start forming teams and discussing the second exciting game jam.

It’s going to be a great night. We hope to see you there.

Game Jam 2

Let the Game Development continue! The GDC is pleased to announce the details for our next Game Jam, a week long event in which teams or individuals try to create a game based around a set theme.

The second Game Jam will start on Wednesday 3rd March at our Meet and Greet Event and will run for exactly one week from when we announce the theme on that night. Don’t worry if you can’t attend our Meet and Greet as we’ll also be posting the theme up on our site at around the same time. There are several rules associated with the Jam so be sure to take note. They are:

  • All entries must be submitted between the start date(around 6:00pm Wednesday 3rd March) and the end date(around 6:00pm Wednesday 10th March).
  • All entries must be based around the theme set. The association doesn’t have to be strong but it has to be there in some form.
  • You/your team must be the original authors any game related material. You may use other art, code samples, etc as long you have permission from the original author/s.
  • Content of the games must be appropriate. Rule of thumb: If you wouldn’t show it to your mother then don’t show it to us.
  • You must provide details on what is required to run your game. If you provide source code then we require a building script so that we can build you game. If we can’t run it then we can’t accept it.

Valid entries will be chosen from topics posted on the Game Jam 2 Board on our forums. Please post a title of your game, names of team members/individual and a link to download your game/source.

You can create your game using whatever tools are most convenient or you. We highly encourage sharing the source code for your game. We are willing to accept any requests for subversion hosting. You can request subversion hosting in this thread on our forums. You aren’t limited to just creating a video games but any type of game such as board games or card games.

Throughout this week we encourage people to use our IRC channel to discuss their games and ideas with others. You can also use our forums to share ideas and discuss your progress. General Discussion on the Game Jam can take place in this thread and you can create topics in the Game Jam 2 Board about your games.

At the end of the Jam we will post up a list of all of the completed entries to check out. We are also hoping to have a post jam meetup so keep your eyes peeled for more details about that. Good luck and may all the games you create be good ones.

Game Development Club at O Week
